At age eight Kelsey Wyss began her basketball career, playing Upward Sports at Avalon Missionary Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. While learning the fundamental skills of basketball, Kelsey’s love for the game began to grow.
By the fifth grade, Kelsey’s talent was obvious and the Upward Basketball league she participated in asked her to play with the 6th-8th grade team. She was thrilled!
“My Upward Basketball coaches taught me the basic skills I needed to participate at a higher level,” said Kelsey. “I couldn’t believe it when they asked me to play with people three years older than me—but I was ready for the challenge.”
In high school, Kelsey played for Bishop Luers High School in Hoagland, Indiana. Her freshman year, she was named MVP after winning the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Championship, contributing 21 points and 8 rebounds.
“Winning the state championship is something I'll never forget it. Our team worked so hard all year and it paid off in the end," said Kelsey.
Now, a rising sophomore guard for Eastern Illinois’ women’s basketball team, Kelsey credits Upward Basketball for preparing her for her college sports career. “Upward Basketball taught me to think about my actions on the court and about the message I am sending to the people watching,” she said. “The Upward Basketball experience taught me that God has blessed me with a talent and I need to play the game in a way that honors Him.”
And play the game she has. In 18 games so far this season, Kelsey has averaged 4.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
“I am so thankful that Upward Basketball taught me the importance of team work and fundamentals. We spend every day together and go through a lot as a team,” said Kelsey. We rely on each other to be there when we need someone to pick us up. Through basketball, I have made sisters for life.”
