Summer has arrived, and with it, our dreams of relaxing vacations and afternoons by the pool with family are finally becoming a reality. It’s clear that the months of June through August will be providing us, once again, with the much-needed rest and relaxation we’ve been craving all year.
Here at Upward Sports, we know that for many young athletes, summer vacation can also be a somewhat distracting time—a season that, if not utilized well, can result in a lack of sharpness and fatigue when returning to a sport.
So how can you make the most of your free time this summer? Try these 5 ideas to help continue improving as a total athlete, even while away from the game.
- Set Summer Goals
When summer is over, how will you wish you spent your time? What will you wish you accomplished? Take time to make tangible, measurable goals for yourself while summer vacation is still fresh. Maybe you want to finish a summer reading list, improve your mile run by 15 seconds, commit to starting your mornings reading the Bible, or spend time with family or friends. Making specific mental, physical, spiritual, and social goals will help you make the most of your time this summer and grow as an individual.
- Try Something New
Is there a something you’ve wanted to learn or try? A new game or sport, a new recipe to cook, or a new musical instrument? Then, there’s no better time than this summer to organize a game with friends, fire up the grill, and play some new music. Find out what interests you and dive in – challenge yourself this summer!
- Spend Time Volunteering
What fun ways can you dream up to serve your community? Grab a couple of friends and get creative. Clean up a local park, spend time with the elderly, or get involved in community projects such as the local food bank and Habitat for Humanity. Take advantage of the countless opportunities available to you around your city this summer.
- Focus on the Fundamentals
If you’re an athlete, what basic skills could you improve upon before next season? Taking time during summer to focus on the fundamentals in your sport can help keep your skills sharp. Enroll in an Upward Sports clinic or camp near you to continue your growth as an athlete.
- Eat Healthy
What foods help energize you and make you strong? Rather than reaching for junk food by the pool, nourish your body with fresh fruits and vegetables. When the weather heats up, nothing is more refreshing than cool, fresh foods such as strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelon. Treat yourself to some new healthy alternatives this summer!
In whatever you do this summer, remember to be intentional. Do everything with purpose. Spend time with family and friends as much as possible, enjoy new activities, and remember to rest your body and mind during these warm, relaxing months.
